Mechanical Engineering and Design

EDM Services not only provides high-quality mechanical engineering services but is a recognized expert in this field. Our staff is very knowledgeable of the applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, and standards (LORS), including 49 CFR 192 and 195 and the various ASME codes (e.g., B31.3, B31.4, and B31.8), which govern the design of most energy and pipeline facilities.

This expertise has been recognized by several California Agencies responsible for code enforcement on oil, gas, utility, and power projects (e.g., California Public Utilities Commission, California Energy Commission, California State Lands Commission, and various Counties throughout the state). Where we do not have a conflict of interest, we often act as the Deputy Chief Building Official (DCBO) for these agencies. In this capacity, we are responsible for conducting plan checks, reviewing calculations for code compliance, resolving code interpretation issues, etc. For example, we have provided numerous code interpretations to the California Energy Commission relating to the mechanical design and construction of natural gas-fired turbine power plants.

Mechanical engineering and design continues to be a major component of most of our multi-disciplined projects. This work most often involves the following deliverables:

  • Mechanical specifications,

  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s),

  • Piping plans, sections, elevations, and details,

  • Piping isometrics and bills of material (BOM),

  • MOP / MAOP calculations with adjustment for elevation profiles,

  • Hydrostatic testing plans and line drying procedures with supporting drawings to established MOP / MAOP for regulatory requirements,

  • 3D piping models,

  • Vessels, tanks and equipment sizing and design,

  • Compressor and pump sizing,

  • Process equipment sizing,

  • Control valve and pressure regulator sizing,

  • Pressure relief valve sizing,

  • Measurement equipment sizing for AGA and API compliance,

  • Process simulation modeling using Synergi SPS Modeler software,

  • Static and dynamic hydraulic modeling / analysis using Synergi SPS Modeler software and hydraulic study reports,

  • Pipe stress and flexibility analysis using CAESAR II pipe stress software and pipe stress analysis reports,

  • Ventilation system sizing for enclosed spaces such as compressor buildings,

  • Process control, instrumentation, and electrical integration with mechanical systems, and

  • Facility Signage.
